About Shine Music Academy
Shine Music Academy is the education arm of the organisation, providing private, group or band lessons in the studio, in-homes and in through outside institutions.
Shine offers lessons in all styles, including rock, jazz, and classical, for individuals or in a group.
Founded in 2002, the Shine Foundation is dedicated to the promotion of music education, performance, and production.
Shine operates a music academy (Shine Music Academy), a booking agency (Shine Concerts), and a recording studio (Shine Studios) as part of an overall mandate of developing the musical community of Ottawa and of making music accessible to everyone.
Shine Music Academy employs professional musicians as instructors, teaching both private lessons and band classes on a variety of instruments.
Shine Concerts works with musicians, venues, and festivals in the National Capital Region and beyond to provide opportunities for artists.
Shine Studios provides Ottawa musicians affordable access to high-quality recording facilities, with an emphasis on artists recording original music.
Overall Shine works to make the transition between the three aspects seamless: all Shine bands participate in recording and performance, and Shine mentors help student bands transition into self-directed, independent, recording and performing bands.
Shine works with other charities in the National Capital Region and around the country to raise money for worthy causes.

The vision of the Shine Foundation is to assimilate the disparate aspects of music education, performance and production into a single ongoing and unified process. By bridging the gap between students and professional artists the student develops a realistic skill set which they will require for success. In providing production facilities for music which are both state of the art and cost efficient, the foundation promotes the growth of a healthy and sustainable musical community. By inviting the participation of local businesses, community organizations and artists in the production of concerts and events, Shine aims to build partnerships that produce an environment where excellent music performances can be appreciated with regularity by everyone.
Grants, Partners and Sponsors
Shine is a federally registered charity and humbly acknowledges the support from individuals, the community and organizations.
The Shine Foundation is more than a music school or an artist-run centre; Shine endeavours to expand musical literacy beyond academia and to create a community that fosters musicians by building mentoring relationships with professional performers. The goal is to advance the full range of musical activity and to eliminate the boundaries between learning, performance and the audience.
Sponsorship opportunities with Shine are available. In-kind donations and financial contributions are both welcome, and will be recognized on our website and in the media. Contact assistant program director us for more information.
Excellent recording and rehearsal space. Instruments are top notch and the recording equipment is the best you can find on the market. Kelly, the owner, is an awesome musician with 40+ years under his belt. Great teacher for piano, bass, trumpet, you name it. On top of that, once you progress in your instrument, he can help put you in contact with other musicians and facilitate the difficult process of forming a band (especially hard when you're 15 and don't know anybody). All in all, great place for any aspiring musician
Really well run, professional place for kids to enjoy playing and learning music
My son participated in Shine until his band mates headed off to university. He had a terrific time, learning how to play with other musicians, playing live shows Kelly organized, and recording songs at the extremely nice studio. I can't say enough about how positive this experience was for my son, and how much we enjoyed seeing all the kids perform.
Our son learned base guitar with Kelly Craig, the musical director of Shine Academy. Mr Craig's longstanding professional experience and academic background allowed our son to flourish very quickly. He had a great time in the process and enjoyed the coached bands where he got to put into practice what he was learning. Hope this venue carries on for a long time to come.
Great musicianship, great encouragement for students
All three of my kids were students at Shine: the eldest plays bass, the second, drums and the youngest, sax. They all loved to go to the lessons and the instructors were encouraging and supportive, as well as creative and flexible. My older daughter was part of some of the bands, and participated in some competitions with them. She loved it so much she helped out with summer Jam Camp as well. Kelly is inspiring as a teacher, and relates so well with the students. We are lucky to have met him and been involved with Shine.
Great teachers and positive learning environment
Shine Music Academy was where I learned to play saxophone as a grade six student. Joining a band was a great experience for myself and allowed me to learn a new skill as well as meet great people. Kelly Craig has been a close friend ever since I started at Shine and has helped me grow as a musician and as a person. Highly recommended.
The BEST part of growing up in Ottawa
Let me tell you a little bit about the birth of Shine Academy. When my friends and I graduated from Hopewell PS in 2002, we wanted to keep playing jazz together as a band despite going off to different high schools. We were busking around town for small change and ice cream that summer, but had no place to practice and no one to keep learning from. We approached Kelly Craig, a local trumpet teacher, and he eagerly set up a space for us at the Glebe CC to continue playing together and to teach us jazz as a group. He built this charity from the ground up while babysitting us @#%^ heads, and that is no small feat. There must now be over a hundred Shine alumni grateful to one of the most benevolent musicians in Ottawa for giving them the opportunity to play what they want to play, together. If they're not all leaving 5-star reviews, it's because they're busy practicing. Send your kids to Shine.
My son took trumpet lessons with Kelley Craig and played in his bands all through high school. Kelley is a gifted teacher and an inspired leader--always patient, enthusiastic, creative. My son benefited tremendously from playing in 'real' venues with Kelly's bands (not just in the high school auditorium like he did with the high school bands). An excellent growth experience for my son--I would recommend Shine unconditionally.
Kelly Craig and the shine music academy was an integral part of my development not only as a musician but as a human being. It was an amazing experience to be able to learn the different aspects of music and such and kelly really knows his stuff. He was caring always tried to help out in anyway he could and always tried to go the extra mile. I can't thank him enough for everything he has done for me
A great place to learn
I'm an alumni of this school, and I went here when I was fairly young for drum lessons. Looking back, it's hard to think of where in Ottawa I'd have gotten such great music instruction from a pool of such dedicated, talented local musicians. The idea of getting students together in a band is a great idea, as it gives students the goal of a concert and a way to socialize and interact with other kids interested in music. The recording space is also top-notch. Shine feels like a center for music around the city that really works to instill in the young a love of music. Places like this with a genuine and charitable mission are sorely needed to keep the arts alive. Attending was one of the best experiences of my youth.
Growth Oriented Education
Shine Music Academy connects students with music educators who have a vast range of performance experience. Students in private lessons learn how to practice efficiently and effectively, with a focus on developing a work ethic which effects all areas of life.
The Shine Music Academy was a great place for my son to learn how to play trumpet and drums. Kelly Craig and all the staff are amazing. great facility! great program!
A great summer of band lessons and performance that projected my son to a new level of skill on the drum kit.
My son was recruited to Shine by the members of a Shine community band that rehearsed in the attic of the Glebe Community Centre. He was a drummer with a fair amount of drumming experience from the music program at Hopewell Public School. That summer he joined Blues in the Schools, participated in the Battle of the Bands, played on main stage at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in a youth band under the guidance of a skilled Blues musician from the deep South, all because Shine made these performance opportunities possible. Shine is better now by far than it was then because it has a studio and recording facilities. Just as importantly, the Director of Program, Kelly Craig, who encouraged my son to take off musically, is still there!
I went to Shine for years as a kid and I'm grateful for my experience there. The teachers at Shine thought me everything I know about music, and my continued passion for playing and intrigue for learning definitely sprouted at Shine. I highly recommend Shine for kids and adults alike looking to learn to play music.
SHINE - Shines !
My daughter attended SHINE for 7 years where she received lessons on trumpet from Kelly Craig, Through Kelly she acquired fantastic fundamental skills, a thorough understanding of music theory, and advanced training that allowed her excel in the music program at Canterbury High School in Ottawa. Starting at an early age she also had the wonderful opportunity to play in several jazz bands at SHINE.
Everything you want in a musical experience for and then some!
Two of our boys attended Canterbury High School in its fine arts Music Programme. Both boys supplemented their instrument and theory training at the Shine Academy. We can't say enough about the quality of teaching and resources offered by Shine. Ottawa is fortunate to have professional musicians of the caliber of Kelly Craig and his line-up of instructors who not only share their passion for music on stage but also in the classroom sharing their knowledge, experience and techniques with our children.
My kids loved it!
Kelly of Shine Academy is a superb musician and teacher. He taught all four of my children. They loved his approach, helpfulness and easy manner. In the academy my kids not only had excellent one on one lessons but also had the wonderful opportunity to play in diverse bands with actual public performances in Ottawa. I really recommend having your kids get involved with this amazing community experience.
Changed my perspective on music
Before Shine, I played classical piano and took RCM exams. When I got involved with the Shine Music Academy, I didn't know much outside my bubble of List A-D pieces and studies. But when I got to Shine, Kelly set me up with a diverse group of musicians who changed the way I approached music! Being in a band with Shine taught me how to improvise and how to learn music by ear; I was exposed me to a wide variety of styles I had never experienced before. The teachers are all professional musicians - they provided me a genuine insight into the life of a modern musician. Because lessons all happen at the studio, I was able to get a big-picture understanding of the music industry. I got trumpet lessons, played in a band, and then learned how to record with sophisticated equipment and software. It was awesome!
It was great
Three of my four children went through the Shine experience. All had excellent experiences and learned a great deal from Kelly including the recording and performance experience.
